The Herengracht (Gentleman's Canal) is considered one of the most important canals of Amsterdam. After passing the Amstel river we can see The Portuguese Synagogue and Hortus Botanicus ending at the Scheepvaart Museum.
The Emperor’s Canal is the middle one of the three main canals in Amsterdam. It was named after Emperor Maximilian of Austria. It is 31 meters wide, the widest canal in the inner city. You will see among other things, the Greenland Warehouses with their step gable ornaments, the Rode Hoed (red hat) with its hidden church, the House with the Heads, Canal House Hotel, Colman's House where Amnesty International is housed, Homo Monument, Felix Meritis, Dylan Hotel, House Marseille, John Adams house (2nd president of the USA), Foam Photography Museum, Museum van Loon with its original interior, and Geelvinck Museum.
Prinsengracht is the third and outermost of the three main canals of Amsterdam. The entrance to the Prinsengracht is the ‘Eenhoornsluis’ (Unicorn Lock), one of the 16 water locks which were built around the city in the 17th century, to control the water level in the canals and to protect the city against the sea. Amsterdam owes its name to the Amstel river. Towards the end of the 12th century, a small settlement originated around a dam in the Amstel river. This dam is still the most central part of town. When cruising on the Amstel we will pass Hotel L'Europe, City Hall, Museum Hermitage, the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge), Amstel Intercontinental Hotel, Koninklijk Theater Carré, and Berlage Brug. It is possible to continue southwards down the Amstel as the river winds through the beautiful countryside to the small town of Ouderkerk on de Amstel

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in Amsterdam and rented a boat from ABC. It made for a brilliant afternoon with our 40 guests, a mix between friends from both Holland and England. The skipper, Date, and crew Gillian and Lieve made sure we saw the most beautiful parts of Amsterdam and that our glasses were constantly filled.
