Dam Square
1. The dam, Also known as the City built on trees: Due to the soil in Amsterdam consisting of a thick layer of fen and clay, some buildings in the city are built on wooden poles that are fixed in a sandy layer that is approximately 11 meters deep. Since the old days, the houses in Amsterdam were known to have been built on wooden foundation piles that are driven deep into the clay, peat, and water until they reach the first layer of solid sand.

Hidden gems and insights in the red light district

We had a great tour with Scarlet as our guide. We got to learn about the history of the area nearby the red light district, plus details about the district and how it works. It was very informative and Scarlet was a terrific guide, her passion and knowledge really brought the neighbourhood to life. I would recommend not booking too late in the evening as things start getting very busy around 9:30pm - our tour ran 7-9 and that was just about perfect.
Insightful walking tour, lots of history and details

Hearing the history of the district and how it’s changed over the years.
Tour guide was so interesting to listen to, knew everything you could ask and took us to a local gin bar which we would’ve have experienced with the local knowledge.
Would thoroughly recommend!
Great tour of central Amsterdam

Aarre was a fantastic guide. He had very thorough historical knowledge of Central Amsterdam. He gave us a recommendation for a great seafood restaurant that was nearby and even called in a reservation for us! Definitely ask for Aarre!
Red Light District walking tour… opt for Canal Boat tour

Our guide was pleasant and gave some interesting tips. But, overall, he mostly wanted to talk about marijuana. I thought I would learn more about the ladies of the night and their history in Amsterdam’s history. There were a few nuggets of history but for the cost of the trip, I’d rather have taken a canal tour of the area!
